Closest Airport to Long Beach Cruise Terminal: LGB vs LAX vs SNA

When selecting an airport for your cruise, consider the convenience and overall experience. Long Beach Airport (LGB) offers a seamless travel option for those prioritizing proximity and ease of access. Conversely, Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) presents a wider selection of flights, though it necessitates careful planning to ensure timely arrival. If cost is a primary concern and accommodations are nearby, John Wayne Airport (SNA) is a viable alternative, though additional travel arrangements to cover the distance to the terminal will be required.

The closest airport to the Long Beach cruise terminal is Long Beach Airport (LGB). One guide puts LGB at around 11.2 miles from the terminal, and another lists 12 miles and about 20 minutes. LAX is the airport most cruisers use, and John Wayne Airport (SNA) in Orange County is the farthest of the three. Which one is best depends on where you are flying from and how much risk you want on sailing morning.

One check first. The terminal at 231 Windsor Way is Carnival’s. Most Carnival ships sail from Long Beach, while almost all other lines use the World Cruise Center in San Pedro (SanPedro.com). Confirm your departure port on your cruise documents before you pick an airport.

The three airports side by side

Distances and drive times below come from the sources linked in this article, which I checked in October 2026. Traffic changes the times a lot, so treat them as ranges.

Long Beach Airport (LGB): shortest ride, smaller network

LGB is the easiest airport for a cruise if your home city has a nonstop flight to it. The airport is small and the ride is short. The catch is the route map. The airport’s own page lists 21 nonstop destinations and nearly 400 one-stop connections (longbeach.gov/lgb). That page’s flight board shows Southwest, Delta and Alaska flights from cities such as Las Vegas, Salt Lake City, Chicago, Phoenix and Austin. It also notes twice-daily Alaska Airlines service to Seattle. The page was not recently dated, so check current airlines and routes before you buy.

If you are coming from the East Coast or the Midwest, you will probably connect through a hub such as Salt Lake City or Las Vegas. Compare that against a nonstop into LAX.

Carnival sells a transfer from LGB. It starts at $31.99 per person, and your flight must land by 12:30 PM on cruise day (Carnival). Guests meet at baggage claim 1. One older port guide says there is no LGB shuttle, but Carnival’s own page lists one, so go by Carnival.

Los Angeles International (LAX): most flights, longest unknown

LAX is where most nonstop flights land, and most Long Beach cruisers fly into it (Cruise Critic). The drive to the terminal is about 20 miles on the I-405 and I-710. It can take 25 to 70+ minutes, especially on Friday afternoons and Saturday mornings (Cruise Port Advisor). That source suggests allowing 90+ minutes from landing to the terminal on a Saturday morning arrival.

Your options from LAX:

• Carnival transfer. From $34.99 per person, and your flight must arrive by 12:00 PM (Carnival). Meeting points are baggage claim 1 for Terminals 1 and 2, and baggage claim 5 for Terminals 4 to 7.
• Uber or Lyft. Typically $35 to $65 for a standard car, per the same guide. LAX’s rideshare pickup arrangements are changing in 2026, so check where to meet your driver.
• Shared van. About $25 to $40 per person, but the ride can take 60 to 120 minutes with other stops.
• Public transit. The Metro route needs many transfers and takes almost two hours plus waiting (CruiseParking.com). That is a hard trip with cruise luggage.

If you are arriving from Portland, our guide to flights from PDX to LAX covers fares into this airport.

John Wayne Airport (SNA): only if the fare or the hotel makes sense

SNA is the farthest of the three. The drive is about 28 miles and usually 30 to 45 minutes (Prime Time Shuttle). Carnival’s transfer page covers LAX and LGB only. Cruise Critic says SNA arrivals need a taxi or a rental car. One guide puts a taxi at $70 to $110. SNA can still be worth it if its fare is much lower or you are staying with family in Orange County, but it is rarely the simplest choice for a first-time cruiser.

Sail-day timing

Carnival’s transfer rules show how tight a same-day arrival is. The cutoff is noon at LAX and 12:30 PM at LGB. The transfer runs on embarkation and debarkation day only, and guests may purchase it up to two days before sailing (Carnival). For groups of four or more, Carnival points guests to the transportation section of My Cruise Manager.

A flight that lands at 11:30 AM at LAX leaves little room for delays. Flying in the day before removes most of that risk, and you can stay in Long Beach that night. The Courtyard Long Beach is listed as close to the airport, the Metro station and the cruise terminal (Cruise Fever). Ask any hotel whether it runs a terminal shuttle. Hotel Maya’s Carnival package includes parking and a terminal shuttle (Cruise Hive).

If you are renting a car or driving yourself

Parking is the other cost to plan for. The terminal garage holds 1,450 vehicles and was listed at $23 a day, with a 7-foot height limit. Cruise Hive says the terminal has significant and ongoing capacity issues. On some sailings guests have been redirected to off-site parking at $20 a day (Cruise Hive). Rates were last confirmed in guides I checked in October 2026. Confirm the current rate and parking plan for your sailing before you travel.

On a one-way trip, a rental car adds little. You would pay for the car, then for parking on top of it. Most cruisers flying in find a transfer or rideshare simpler.

Which airport to choose

1. A nonstop to LGB is available at a fair fare: choose LGB. It has the shortest ride and the simplest sail day.
2. The best flights go to LAX: choose LAX, but arrive the day before or land early. Treat a Carnival noon cutoff as a deadline, not a target.
3. SNA is much cheaper or you are staying nearby: choose SNA, and plan a taxi, rideshare or private car for the last 28 miles.

Whichever airport you pick, check that your ship leaves from Long Beach and not San Pedro, then confirm fares, transfer prices and cutoffs with Carnival before you commit.
